UNDERGRADUATE DEPARTMENT OF EXERCISE SCIENCE
Athletic Training Major

Students in this program earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training.

Athletic Training is an allied health care profession responsible for the health care of athletes and physically active individuals. Athletic trainers provide information on injury prevention, evaluation and treatment of athletic injuries, rehabilitation of injuries, and provide other aspects of health care to physically active individuals.

The GW Athletic Training Education Program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) Programs; it is the only such accredited program in Washington, DC.

Educational Requirements

In this program, students complete:

  • 45 semester hours of general education
  • 74 semester hours of coursework in the Athletic Training major
  • 5 semester hours of electives

In the Athletic Training major, coursework focuses on all aspects of medical care and treatment of injuries to physically active individuals. Areas of study include care, prevention, evaluation and treatment of injuries, as well as therapeutic exercise, therapeutic modalities, and CPR/first aid. Athletic training administration, psychology of injury and performance, and medical issues in athletic training are also studied.

Benefits of the Athletic Training Major:

  • Prepares students for a wide variety of employment opportunities, including, providing athletic care for collegiate, high school, and professional athletes; working in a rehabilitation clinic; or working in an industrial setting;
  • Affords opportunities to participate in practicums in a variety of settings, such as GW and other NCAA institutions, public and private high schools, professional teams, and clinics;
  • Allows students to pursue further study or a career upon graduation;
  • Graduates of the program are eligible to take the Board of Certification (BOC) exam.
