Specialty Training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
Steven
Bielamowicz , M.D.
Professor of Surgery
Division Director
The Division of Otolaryngology-Head
and Neck Surgery is a very active service. The members of the division
routinely treat complex head and neck disorders including carcinomas,
acoustic neuromas, lesions of the oropharynx and larynx, sinuses, middle
ear and thyroid. The Vestibular Laboratory evaluates patients with difficult
disorders of balance and complaints of dizziness and the newly established
Voice Treatment Center provides patients with the most modern techniques
for voice analysis, treatment and surgery. The faculty works closely with
members of the Divisions of General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Thoracic
Surgery and the Department of Neurosurgery. There is a residency in Otolaryngology-Head
and Neck Surgery.
First year residents from the General Surgery Residency Program at GWUMC
rotate through this service and have primary responsibly for patient management
and wound care. They gain surgical experience by assisting on the more
complex procedures and by performing the simpler ones such as tracheotomy,
placement of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomies, and biopsies.
