Specialty Training in General Surgery

The Division of General Surgery provides the academic and clinical infrastructure of the Residency Program in Surgery. Supervised by the full-time and voluntary faculty, residents obtain ample experience in surgery of the alimentary tract, the female breast, the abdomen and its contents, and the endocrine system. At the University Hospital, the general surgeons are responsible for the total management of patients with major trauma. Individual faculty members have special interests and expertise in surgery of the breast, laparoscopic procedures and surgery of the upper gastro-intestinal tract, biliary tree, and pancreas. Additional experience is gained at the affiliated institutions. Fifth year residents and chief residents spend nine months of the year working with full-time university faculty. While at the University Hospital, these residents participate in the care of the complicated tertiary referral patients. They follow patients through their preoperative evaluation in the clinic, their surgery, their postoperative recovery, and return visits. This gives the residents exposure to the complete care of surgical patients.
