Residency Program

Application Process
2009 - 2010

Thank you for your interest in the General Surgery Residency Program at The George Washington University. We offer four (4) categorical positions, beginning July 1, 2009, through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP). In addition, there are eight (8) preliminary positions, however, these are filled from the surgical subspecialties within the Medical Center.

The Department will use the Electronic Residency Application Service ERAS to process and review candidates' eligibility. Each applicant must be a graduate of an approved medical school, and should be in the upper third of his or her class. A letter from the Dean, three (3) letters of recommendation, an official transcript, a personal statement, a curriculum vitae, scores from Parts I and II of the National Board examinations, and photograph should be submitted to ERAS between September 1, 2008 when the ERAS Post Office opens and the application deadline, Tuesday, November 4, 2008. Materials received after November 4th will not be considered.

All information, which you wish to be reviewed, must be submitted through the ERAS Post Office. If the General Surgery Program Office at GWUMC needs any supplementary material, we will contact you. The AAMC provides the opportunity for you to make changes or deletions, when necessary. You may make a change at any time during the process. Any new information you submit to ERAS overwrites the material previously submitted.

When all application materials have been received, selected individuals will be offered a personal interview. Interviews will be conducted on specific Wednesdays and Saturdays during December and early January. At that time, the applicant will have the opportunity to meet several of the surgical faculty members, tour the Medical Center, and discuss the training program with our house staff.

Our department will E-MAIL the invitations to the residents selected for an interview. The interview dates are filled on a first-response-first-confirmed basis.

The match lists are submitted in February, and results of the match are available during the middle of March. The specific dates are listed with the material you receive from the Match Program. No results will be released until noon on Match Day except to those individuals who did not match.

We appreciate your interest in the General Surgery Residency Training Program at The George Washington University Medical Center and wish you well.
