Orentation

Begins with a meeting where Dr. Charles Macri (Director) and Nikki Betts (Student Coordinator) will introduce the students to the logistical overview of the clerkship organization, rotations, requirements, grading and philosophy. This is followed by a series of 45 minute presentations on core clinical skills by selected senior housestaff. (see below) Following the orientation, the students will have mini-orientations at the three hospital sites, which will detail specific logistical concerns.

These mini-lectures are intended to orient the practical aspects of the Ob/Gyn clerkship. The designated teaching resident at each site will provide hospital specific orientation. They will occur at the beginning of the eight week clerkship and also at the mid-point or switch date for the hospital sites (i.e., after four weeks).

Suturing/Skills workshop will include knot tying, suturing, OR etiquette, scrubbing, basic surgical anatomy.

Introduction to hospital will include: General orientation about: H&P's, cervical exam, fetal heart rate tracings, post-partum notes; importance of rounding by 7am, meeting patient preop, assertiveness/initiative for successful rotation.

Introduction to OB/PNC: How to do initial and return PNC visit; labs, testing etc.

Introduction to GYN: Steps to pelvic exam, how to write pelvic, basics on contraception, menstrual history, gyn history, terminology (menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea)
