Call

  1. Two students on call each day (1Ob/1Gyn) – call room code-2135
  2. Wear student pagers
  3. Identify yourself to on-call resident in person or by paging

  4. Ob student on call: Gyn student on call:
    shadow intern on call shadow Gyn resident on call
    write H&P’s on laboring pts involved in ED consults
    involved with deliveries should not be in scheduled OR cases
    involved in Cesarean sections round on admitted or post-op pts

Patient Care

  1. Always introduce yourself
  2. You will round on all patients you were directly involved with, within reasonable learning limits. Please inform your resident if you feel your patient load is excessive.
  3. Rounding should be done by 6:30am M-F, 8:30am Sat/Sun, unless otherwise specified.
  4. If there is a question or concern regarding a patient’s physical exam findings,
    lab/diagnostic test, results, etc., please discuss them with the resident following the pt.

Attire

Please wear professional attire. GW provides clean scrubs. GW scrubs must be worn if you are scheduled for an OR case or on call. Professional attire must be worn in the clinic. You can find scrubs at a desk in the OR suite on the first floor. Please do not wear scrubs from other hospitals or from home (OSHA guidelines).

Clinic

  1. Located across the street from the hospital in the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC), on
    the 5th floor and on 6th floor (IVF).
  2. Office hours begin between 8-8:30am on all days but Wednesday (which starts
    between 8:30-9am ).
  3. You will be assigned to the different attendings’ office hours. Please be on time.

Operating Room / Surgery

  1. Located on the first floor of the hospital.
  2. See daily schedule on chief’s call room board for daily assignments.
  3. Introduce yourself to the patient in pre-op holding about 15-20 minutes before the
    surgery; familiarize yourself with the patient’s history, reason for surgery, pastOb/Gyn
    history, surgeries, etc. Do a brief H&P if there is not one on the chart.
  4. Upon entering the surgical area, wear only scrubs (no lab coats please!), put on cap,
    mask, eye protection (even if you wear glasses) and booties.
  5. Upon entering the OR, please write your name on the dry erase board and introduce
    yourself to the circulating nurse, the scrub nurse, etc. Ask if a gown needs to be pulled for you. You will also need to pull gloves for yourself and give them to the scrub nurse in a sterile manner. Ask if you need help.
  6. Observe and learn to help with the pre-op and post-operative patient preparations, i.e.,
    transferring the patient, place compression stocking, attaching arm boards, stirrups, cleaning the patient, etc.
  7. Write the brief op note and round on your patients while in the hospital.

Oncology Service

  1. Two students on the oncology service for two week blocks.
  2. Attending is Dr. MacKoul.
  3. Oncology clinic on Mondays, from 8-4, and Thursday afternoons, from 1-4pm.
  4. Surgery on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and sometimes Fridays.
  5. Round on all in house oncology patients.

Reproductive Endocrinology / I.V.F. Service

  1. Two students on the REI service for two-week blocks.
  2. Attendings are Dr. Charles Macri and lab director is Dr. Dubey.
  3. Clinic is every AM Monday – Friday and every PM M, Tu, W, Fri.
  4. IVF retrievals daily (7 days/week).
  5. Sonohysterograms are done Wednesday afternoons.
  6. Students are to be assigned along with PGY4 and PGY2 resident daily.
