On the obstetric service you will
be responsible for a history and physical exam
on patients you admit to Labor and Delivery. Each
hospital has different forms for this purpose.
After delivery, you should round on the patient
postpartum, until discharge, writing appropriate
progress notes. All lab work must be followed
up. If an antepartum patient is admitted with
a problem, you are again responsible for an initial
history and physical exam, daily notes in the
chart until discharge, and lab work. This can
be individualized by arrangement with the Chief
Resident on the particular service.
On the gynecology service you should write up
any patient on whom you are assigned to participate
in the surgery. Postoperatively you round daily
until discharged. A nonsurgical gyn admission
requires a history and physical exam, daily progress
notes, and lab follow-up.
All of your chart work should be supervised
and co-signed by the resident or faculty member
involved. This is especially important for any
orders you write. Please request feedback on you
work if you do not receive it. It is a shared
responsibility that you get adequate feedback
during the rotation.
In the outpatient clinic setting you will be
seeing patients for routine prenatal visits and
routine gyn care/complications. You should become
proficient in performing pelvic exams and obtaining
a Pap smear. This will be evaluated before the
clerkship is completed.
In addition to your general reading, you should
explore in more depth any condition/complications
presenting in your specific ob/gyn patients. Before
attending surgery, you should read enough to know
basic anatomy, and you should be able to formulate
a differential diagnosis and plan of management
for these patients including post-operative care.
Within your weekly schedules your first priority
should be the didactic sessions/lectures/conferences
which are designed for your teaching and meetings
with your faculty preceptor and Teaching Resident.
Attendance is required and failure to attend these sessions will
be grounds for remediation.
Any problems can be addressed with either the
Faculty Preceptor or Teaching Resident and Administrative
Chief Resident. The Clerkship Coordinator is readily
available to discuss any problems or difficulties
that may arise. You may contact the Student Coordinator
(202) 741-2510 to set up an appointment.
