Welcome from the Primary Care Program Director We have one of the nation's oldest primary care residency programs—over 25 years old and still going strong. It is also one of only a few programs with a continuous year of ambulatory care training. Our residents undergo extensive training in internal medicine and its subspecialties as well as in non-medicine areas such as orthopedics, geriatrics, breast clinic, ENT and dermatology. Medical ethics, community medicine, health policy and evidence-based medicine are important components of the curriculum.

GWUMC
Primary Care Residents are based in the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC)
in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington, D.C, across from the
GW Hospital. Most outpatient clinics are in the ACC, but residents can
rotate through suburban sites as well. Residents also work every week
in one university-affiliated community free clinic for the medically
indigent. While in their primary care year, residents complete a research
project with their faculty research mentor.
This
broad-based intensive ambulatory experience allows the graduates of
the primary care track to provide superior care in internal medicine.
Our graduates are well prepared wherever they go, from academic medicine
to primary care practice.
