The Preliminary Medicine Track

The Preliminary Internal Medicine Program provides one year of introductory training in general internal medicine. The educational goals and objectives of this one-year clinical exposure to internal medicine are the same as those for the Categorical Program. The trainee acquires a broad knowledge and expertise in managing patients with internal medical problems.

With the realization that the preliminary year is a stepping stone to other specialties, preliminary year schedules can be tailored to relate to individual trainee's career paths. To this end, we strive to provide each intern with relevant experiences in their area of future study through an independently designed one-month elective rotation as well as a clinic month.

The most important thing about the preliminary year is that it is indistinguishable from the categorical or primary care internship! There is no second-class citizenship here at GW! The preliminary intern has the same experience and gets the same attention as the categorical and primary care interns.
