Alan G. Wasserman, MD, FACC, FACP
Eugene Meyer Professor of Medicine
Chairman
Dr. Wasserman is a graduate of Hahnemann Medical
College. He received his training in cardiology at The George Washington
University. In 1991 he became Director of the Division of Cardiology
and Associate Chairman of Medicine for Clinical Affairs in 1992. He
is nationally known in the fields of acute myocardial infarction and
cardiac imaging. Dr. Wasserman was named Chairman of Medicine in 1997
and in 1999 appointed the Chief Medical Officer of the University’s
clinical faculty.
Gary L. Simon, MD, PhD, FIDSA, FACP
Professor of Medicine and of Microbiology and Tropical Medicine
and of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Vice Chairman
Director, Division of Infectious Diseases
Dr. Simon is a graduate of the University of
Maryland where he received his MD and the University of Wisconsin
where he received a PhD degree in physical chemistry. He trained in
infectious diseases at the Tufts-New England Medical Center. He has
been on the faculty of The George Washington University since 1980
and in 1984 was named Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency
program and Associate Chairman of the Department of Medicine. Dr.
Simon was named Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine in 1997.
Jehan (Gigi) El-Bayoumi, MD, FACP

Dr. El-Bayoumi was born in Tallahassee, Florida, and attended the University of Michigan for both undergraduate and medical school.
She moved to Washington, D.C., over 14 years ago and started her internship
at GW. After completing her chief residency, she joined the faculty
of the Division of General Internal Medicine. She was the internal
medicine Clerkship Director for several years before becoming Program
Director of the residency program in 1998. She is board certified
in internal medicine and geriatrics. She has been working with the
National Board of Medical Examiners and is active in the Association
of Program Directors in Internal Medicine and the American College
of Physicians.
Sian Spurney, MD
Assistant Program Director
Responsibilities include curriculum development, implementation of competencies,
E*Value Program,
semi-annual evaluations,
nightfloat curriculum,
Public Health Elective/Medicare Part D,
toxicology curriculum,
faculty development through DGIM conferences,
and oversight of fellowship programs.
April Barbour, MD, MPH
Program Director, Primary Care
Dr. Barbour graduated from the University of Virginia in 1988 and then attended Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia. After graduation, she did her residency in internal medicine at Emory University in Atlanta. She stayed on as faculty at Emory where she was active in clinical practice and medical education. In 2002, she completed her MPH at Rollins School of Public Health. She is active in several organizations including ACP, SGIM, and APDIM. Her clinical interests are in venous thromboembolism, preventative medicine and women's health. She is also very active in medical education and curriculum development.
Zohray Talib, MD
Associate Program Director, Primary Care
Dr. Talib completed her undergraduate degree at McGill University in physical therapy. She graduated from University of Alberta medical school and completed her residency at GWU. After completing her chief residency, she was named Associate Program Director of the Primary Care Program in 2006. Special interests include medical education and international health. Responsibilities include curriculum development, teaching residents and oversight of the Primary Care electives.
Sheena Khurana, MD

Responsibilities include ambulatory clinic curriculum, noon conference primary care curriculum, ambulatory clinic administration, faculty development, and clinical competency committee
Katherine Goodrich, MD
Director of Hospitalist Medicine
Dr. Goodrich graduated from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., then attended Lousiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. She came to GW for residency and did a chief residency in 1998-99. Since 1999, she has been a hospitalist at GWUH. Her primary responsibilities are in resident and student education. Specific duties include Director of the Division of Hospital Medicine, Clinical Director of Inpatient Medicine for GWUH, and Chair of the Institutional Review Board. Her interests are medical education, health policy and quality improvement.
Chapy
Venkatesan, MD
Associate Program Director for rotating internal medicine
residents, Inova Fairfax Hospital
Dr. Venkatesan graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in psychology and attended Eastern Virginia Medical School. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Georgetown University Hospital, where he subsequently served as chief resident. His current interests are medical education, inpatient medicine, and conflict resolution.
Tracie Bass
Residency Program Coordinator
Responsibilities include administrative oversight of fellowship coordinators,
coordinators for medical student programs, chief residents, and the clinical competency committee. She manages administrative aspects of
RRC, ABIM IM and Fellowship Programs for the graduate medical education office.
She is integral to recruitment and orientation for the internal medicine residency and fellowship programs. She orchestrates the E*Value Program, a web-based system for evaluations, mini CEXs, and procedure logs.
