Letter from the Chairman

Welcome! We are now in the the first new hospital built in Washington, D.C., in over 20 years. The financing and construction of this new facility is a sign of the commitment to health care and medical education that has been made by the George Washington University.

A quick tour of the sixth floor of the hospital, which is 100 percent dedicated to medical education, will solidify this statement. It is an amazing facility where housestaff and students can hone their skills on models instead of patients and do procedures “virtually” until performance can be perfected. Taking full advantage of the latest technology as well as utilizing standardized patients has put GW on the cutting edge of medical education.

In this era of cutbacks, mergers and financial difficulties for others, GW is moving ahead and opening new programs and recruiting some of the finest physicians and scientists in the country. For almost two centuries, the Department of Medicine has trained the next generation of leaders in patient care, scientific discoveries and medical education.

I am extremely proud of our interns, residents and faculty and remain excited about the challenges that the future holds for us. I am looking forward to your visit to our campus. You will be able to see firsthand the gifted and talented people you will have the opportunity to work with and find an atmosphere conducive to learning.

I am privileged to serve as Chairman of such a distinguished and dedicated group.

Best of luck,

Alan G. Wasserman, M.D.
Eugene Meyer Professor of Medicine
