Sample Rotation Schedules
CA-1 The first year is spent developing basic knowledge of anesthesia. Residents will rotate only at GW Hospital for the entire year. Residents will be assigned to General OR rooms for the majority of the year. Case assignments include General Surgery, Plastics, Ambulatory, ENT, Gynecology, Urology, and Orthopedics. CA-1 residents will rotate through 1 month each of Neuroanesthesia, Obstetrics Anesthesia, and the ICU. CA-1 residents do not have any overnight call responsibilities for the first two months, as they learn the basics of anesthesia and become acclimated to the hospital. Additionally, CA-1 residents will be paired with a faculty mentor and a senior resident for guidance during their first few months at GW. CA-1 residents will began taking OR/trauma overnight call beginning in September. Residents will began carrying the OB pager after they have successfully completed their OB rotation. CA-2 Residents will spend two consecutive months rotating through Critical Care. Two months will also be spent at Children's National Medical Center in Pediatric Anesthesiology. Two months will be assigned to Cardiothoracic Anesthesia. One month will be spent at GW Hospital and the other month will be at The Washington Hospital Center. Residents will also spend one month each in the Pre-Op Clinic/PACU and the Pain Clinic. The rest of the year is devoted to General OR duties. CA-3 Scheduling for the CA-3 year is very flexible. Senior residents are generally assigned to more advanced cases on elective rotations. A high level of independence is granted to the CA-3 resident while still being supervised by staff anesthesiologists. An optional 6-month research track, or a 6-month cardiac track is also offered to interested residents.
