Application Information

Thank you for your interest in the Anesthesiology Training Program at The George Washington University. The George Washington University is an advanced placement program, beginning at the PGY-2, CA-1, level of training. To be considered eligible, you would need to obtain a clinical base year of training (PGY-1) or be actively seeking such a position.

The Department of Anesthesiology Residency Program uses the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) to process and review applications from the candidate pool. The Program seeks applicants who demonstrate proven scholarship, a high level of preparedness, ability, and aptitude. Communication skills, integrity, compassion, courage, and stability are as important as an enthusiasm for patient-care, teaching and research.

The Program requires a complete ERAS package of the following documents:

     a. Curriculum Vitae

b.      Personal Statement

c.       Two letters of recommendation

d.      Dean's letter

e.       Official Medical School Transcript

f.       Official Scores from Step I and Step II of the USMLE

g.      Other information requested on the ERAS application form

The Program also prefers the following credentials:

  1. Demonstrated excellence in the basic sciences and an ability and aptitude in clinical medicine.
  2. Demonstrated (sincere) interest in patient-care, teaching, community service and research.
  3. Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to the department's program:
    1. Graduates of medical schools in the U.S. and Canada accredited by Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
    2. Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the U.S. accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
    3. Graduates of medical schools outside of the U.S. and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:
      1. Have received a currently valid certificate from the
        Educational Commission for Foreign Medical
        Graduates, or
      2. Have a full and unrestricted license to practice
medicine in the U.S. licensing jurisdiction.

Graduates of medical schools outside the U.S. who have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school. For U.S. graduates, the Dean's office of your medical school will provide information and an ERAS application package for you to use to prepare your application.

For international medical graduates, please contact the ECFMG for complete information on the application process. We do not have access to the information needed to complete applications and are not able to assist anyone with the application process.

Applications are accepted from September 1, 2004 until the close of business November 1st, 2004. Although the early submission of your application is encouraged we will continue to review applications through the deadline date.

We will notify you to offer you an invitation if your application is accepted for interview. The interview dates are filled on a first-response-first-confirmed basis. We plan to transmit electronic invitations beginning in November for candidate interviews in November, December and January.

Our residents are selected through the National Resident Match Program (NRMP). Criteria for including applicants on the Rank Order List for the Match are a complete ERAS application package and a personal interview with the department.

We very much appreciate your interest in the Anesthesiology residency-training program at the George Washington University Medical Center and wish you well.
