The George Washington University Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care

Welcome!

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for inquiring about the Anesthesiology Residency program at George Washington University Hospital (GWUH).

As part of the George Washington University Medical Center (GWUMC), our program is unique in many ways.  Our faculty members,  graduates from prominent Anesthesiology programs, are dedicated to excellence in Resident Education.  Our department offers formal didactic sessions every week day.  Our residents rotate through Children’s Hospital (CNMC) and The Washington Hospital Center (WHC).  As a CA-1, you will progress from anesthetizing healthy ambulatory patients during your first six months to embarking on more challenging subspecialties such as Cardiovascular, Neuroanesthesiology, Obstetric Anesthesia and Critical Care Rotations at GWUH during your last six months.  Our subspecialties are taught by attending physicians with interests and fellowships in their particular field.  As a CA-2, you will rotate to CNMC and WHC for Vascular, Thoracic, Cardiovascular and Pediatrics where you will perform Anesthesia in complex cases with  autonomy.  In the CA-3 year, we provide you a six month block of additional subspecialties where you will function at the level of a fellow.  In addition, we offer a six month Clinical Scientist track to those residents wishing to pursue research that pertains to the specialty of Anesthesiology.  However, the most distinctive characteristic of our department is our friendly and supportive environment.  Our graduates are well prepared for private or academic practice. We hope that after visiting our site, you'll consider visiting us in person so you can appreciate the dedication to education, the camaraderie and the high caliber of clinical care we offer. Plus we're located in one of the most vibrant and exciting cities imaginable. So browse the site, email us with any questions that you may have, and give us a visit.  We are proud of our program and look forward to introducing it to you personally.
