Honor Code

Honor Code

The SMHS takes the education of its students very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that it has in place an Honor Code to foster an atmosphere of ethical and responsible behavior and to reinforce the importance of honesty and integrity during the examination process and throughout the student's clinical training. At the time of acceptance, all students are required to sign a statement pledging to uphold the tenets of the Honor Code.

The objective of the Honor Code is to foster a sense of trust, responsibility, and professionalism among students and between students and faculty. Its fundamental goals are to promote ethical behavior, to ensure the integrity of the academic enterprise, and to develop in students a sense of responsibility to maintain the honor of the medical profession. This code of behavior is designed to assist in the personal and intellectual development of the medical student on the journey to becoming a physician and member of the medical community. All members of the medical community must be accountable to themselves and to others.

Personal and professional development as responsible and ethical physicians is central to the experience at The George Washington University. Our goal is to ensure that integrity, ethical behavior, and responsibility are as fundamental to your medical education as are the acquisition of knowledge and the development of clinical skills.
