Do you accept out of state applications? Since GW is located in the District of Columbia and is a private school, there are no state residency criteria.

What factors does the Admissions Committee consider? There are many aspects of an application that we focus on. We evaluate GPA, MCATs, graduate coursework (if over 12 credits), letters of recommendation, essays, medically-related experiences (volunteering in a doctor's office, clinic, hospital, etc), research, extracurricular activities, work experience, community service and leadership experiences.

What are the citizenship requirements for entry into GW Medical School’s four year MD program?
GW accepts only US citizens, current US Permanent Residents (with a valid US Permanent Residency Card) and Canadian citizens to its regular 4-year MD program.

I am NOT a US citizen, current US Permanent Resident, or a Canadian citizen. Is there any way for me to pursue a medical degree at GW as an international student?

An applicant who is not a US Citizen, current US Permanent Resident or Canadian Citizen, may apply to GW's International Medicine Program. (Phone: 202-994-2796 Website: http://www.gwumc.edu/imp/) This is a five year program that prepares non-US citizens for medical practice in their home countries. Applicants must be sponsored by their government or a medical institution in their home country. Please note that international students may not apply to the regular four year MD program. The George Washington University cannot admit you or send you a student visa document (I-20 or DS-2019) until your sponsor has submitted a financial certificate showing sufficient funds to pay for medical school.

International applicants must meet the regular minimum requirements for applying to the first year including completion of at least 90 semester hours at an accredited US or Canadian college or university at the undergraduate or graduate level. All premedical courses must be completed at a US or Canadian college. Eight semester hours (six lecture and two lab) must be completed in each of the following fields: biology, physics, general chemistry, and organic chemistry. Six semester hours of English (literature and/or composition) are also required. International applicants must complete an application with AMCAS (please visit www.aamc.org for more information on completing an AMCAS application) as well as GW's supplemental application. Please note that international students may not apply for transfer admission.

I am a Canadian citizen (and not a US citizen or a current US permanent resident). What financial information is required?

While we do accept Canadian citizens to the four-year regular MD program, Canadian citizens must complete a Financial Certificate at the time of interview. The George Washington University cannot admit you or send you a student visa document (I-20 or DS-2019) until you have submitted a Financial Certificate showing sufficient funds to pay for your educational expenses. The process to obtain a student visa from a US consulate abroad usually takes at least 3-4 months. If you are selected for an interview, you will need to complete a Financial Certificate Form. Please be sure to submit your application materials (AMCAS, secondary application, and letters) early as we do have a rolling admissions policy.

How do I apply for a dual degree program: MD/MPH or MD/PhD?

The admissions processes are completely separate for these programs (MPH and PhD). The Committee on Admissions will only consider your application to the MD program. For questions or admissions information about the MPH or PhD, please consult these programs directly.
School of Public Health: http://www.gwumc.edu/sphhs/
Graduate Programs: http://www.gwu.edu/~gradinfo/Grad_fields.cfm

Does GW Medical School have an Early Decision Program?
The AMCAS Early Decision Program is an accelerated application process recommended to outstanding applicants which grants them a decision by October 1st. Applicants can only apply to one medical school, however, and must attend that school if accepted, or wait until the October decision to apply to other schools if denied. After the Admissions Office receives the AMCAS application by the August 1st deadline, we will send the applicant a secondary application. All application materials (including the secondary application and letters of recommendation and MCAT scores) must be received by the September 1st deadline. August 2008 MCAT scores cannot be reviewed. Further information is available via the AMCAS website at www.aamc.org.

How can I get information about Financial Aid?

For information on Financial Aid, please contact their office at 202-994-2960 or visit their website at http://www.gwumc.edu/smhs/Fin-Aid/.

I have submitted an AMCAS application, but I have not received a secondary application. What should I do?
We do send a secondary application to every applicant who completes an AMCAS application and designates GW Medical School. Please note that it does take AMCAS some time to transmit your completed AMCAS application to the MD Admissions Office. If you have not received a secondary application from the Office of Admissions and it has been four weeks since you submitted your AMCAS application, please e-mail us at medadmit@gwu.edu to inquire about the status of your application.

What are the deadlines for submitting the AMCAS application and the GW Secondary application? The deadline for submission of an AMCAS application is no later than December 1. The completed secondary application and letters of recommendation must be received by January 1.

What should I do if I am scheduled to take the MCAT this summer? If you have valid MCAT scores (meaning MCATs taken within our time limits - 3 years prior to matriculation), there will be a review of your completed application, and it is possible that they may offer you an interview at that time. Otherwise, the Committee will hold your application for your MCAT scores. You should submit your application as soon as possible due to our rolling admissions process. It is best to have everything in our office (supplemental application, letters of recommendation) so that your application is in order and ready to go as soon as we receive your September MCAT scores.

How do you view MCAT scores if an applicant took the test more than once? The Committee on Admissions accepts the highest score in each section. Please keep in mind that for Fall 2009 admissions the Committee will consider MCAT scores from April 2006-September 2008 only.

What are your requirements for letters of recommendation?
If your school has a pre-medical advisor, advisory committee, or a confidential letter collection service, we require that you utilize these services. A composite letter, which compiles information from single letters and interviews and is written by a pre-medical advisor or advisory committee, fulfills our recommendation requirement in full. If the recommendation is not a composite letter or if you utilize a letter collection service, you must submit a minimum of three letters (but not more than five), two from science faculty familiar with your academic work and one from someone acquainted with your personal traits.

If you cannot provide a composite letter or utilize a letter collection service, attach a letter (to your supplemental application) explaining why you cannot and indicate who will be sending individual, single letters on your behalf. Individual, single letters are those sent by the recommender directly to our office and are not processed through a confidential letter collection service. You must submit a minimum of three letters (but not more than five), two from science faculty familiar with your academic work and one from someone acquainted with your personal traits.
If you have attended a graduate program or a post-baccalaureate program, we do require that you submit a letter of recommendation from an advisor or faculty member from that program.

Inform your recommenders that letters must be received no later than January 1st. However, review of an application does not take place until we receive letters of recommendation so it is in your best interest to ensure these letters are sent as early as possible. GW Medical School does have a rolling admissions process.

SUBMIT LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

Inform your submitters that letters of recommendation must be received no later than January 1, 2009.

What happens after I submit my secondary application?

You will receive an e-mail indicating receipt of your secondary, and you will receive another e-mail after your letters of recommendation have been placed in your file. This process does take some time as we do receive over 13,000 AMCAS applications every year. You may want to confirm with your recommenders that the letters have been sent. Please allow us time to process these items.

How do I know when my application is complete? You will receive an email confirming that your application is complete. Your secondary application will not be processed nor completed until the AMCAS application is verified.

When do you interview? Interviews are by invitation only and are conducted on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from September – March.

How long will I have to wait to find out if I will be offered an interview? Interviews are offered on a rolling basis. You will receive an email when your application is complete. Most files are reviewed within two to six weeks of when they are complete. Interview offers are sent via email. Please keep in mind many files are put on hold each year and re-reviewed later in the application season.

My application was completed more than eight weeks ago and I haven’t received any correspondence from you, what should I do? You may visit https://jack.gwumc.edu/AdmissionWeb/ to check the status of your application throughout the application cycle. Please note that you will need to select the appropriate link if you have forgotten your user name or password.

What does “hold” mean? Each year the Committee on Admissions will put a number of files on hold that will be re-reviewed later in the application cycle.

Will the Admissions Office provide counseling to me if I am a perspective applicant or an unsuccessful applicant? Unfortunately, we do not have staff available to provide this counseling. We urge you to utilize your pre-medical advisor. Please note that regardless of your situation we cannot assure you that you are a competitive applicant and will likely be accepted to our program. For questions regarding our process and programs please review this site. Any further questions can be answered via email to medadmit@gwu.edu

Do you accept Community College credits? The Committee on Admissions does accept coursework taken at a Community College; however, it is preferable to have all of the pre-medical coursework taken at a four year college or university.

Do you accept online coursework? No.

I went to a school on a quarter system. You will need to convert your coursework into semester hours. Please see the AMCAS conversion chart for help on this. There should be enough space in the chart on page two for you to list all of the required coursework. Please refrain from attaching separate pages to complete the required pre-medical coursework grid.
