Transfer Application Process

The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences will only accept transfer applicants from U.S. or Canadian schools of medicine and osteopathic medicine programs.

Applicants must be either US or Canadian Citizens or US Permanent Residents. Applicants must have completed a minimum of 90 semester hours, including the required pre-medical coursework, at an accredited U.S. or Canadian college or university prior to matriculation. The vast majority have an undergraduate degree. Eight semester hours (six lecture and two lab) must be completed in each of the following fields: biology, physics, general chemistry, and organic chemistry. Six semester hours of English (literature and/or composition) are also required. Applicants must be in good academic standing and eligible to reenter at their current medical school.

Students eligible to apply to our second or third-year classes are those from U.S. or Canadian schools of medicine, and those enrolled in Osteopathic Medicine Program. Students are eligible to apply if they meet our specific curriculum requirements. All students are required to submit MCAT scores. All Students from osteopathic schools must provide a passing USMLE Step 1 score (we cannot review students from these schools with only one-year of medical school coursework). We cannot sponsor for the USMLE. U.S. applicants applying for the third year must also submit a passing USMLE score (taken by June 30th). Advanced Standing cannot be granted for physician assistant, chiropractic, dental or podiatric programs. No applications are accepted for the fourth year class. The number of second or third year positions varies from year to year. Some years there may be no availability. Applicants, if qualified, can apply specifically for the second or for the third year, or they may express a willingness to consider a position in either year.

Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation. One must be from the Dean of the medical school or osteopathic school at which the student is enrolled stating that the applicant is eligible to continue in that program and giving the reasons for transfer and an overall evaluation of the student. All applicants must be in good standing and be eligible to reenter medical/osteopathic school, if their education has been interrupted. It you cannot meet this requirement, we cannot accept your application for transfer. A small number of applicants may be offered interviews in the early summer.

Application, letters of evaluation, transcripts with medical coursework, and course descriptions may be submitted to our office between February 1 and April 1 for entry in the Fall. All application materials must be received by April 1. Please pay the non-refundable $125 application fee by check or money order payable to "The George Washington University." Please make sure to include your AMCAS ID number and your name on the check/money order. If you are a Canadian applicant, all checks and money orders must be payable through a US Bank. If sending a Canadian money order, please verify that a US bank's name and address are printed on the face of the money order. Please do not send cash. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
