Cytopathology Application Process

The Cytopathology Fellowship Program at GWU offers comprehensive training in all aspects of cytopathology, with special emphasis on fine needle aspiration. Approximately half of all fine needle aspiration procedures done in the Medical Center are performed by the pathologists in our Pathology Department-based FNA Clinic. The use of ThinPrep processing technology, availability of extensive on-site ancillary techniques, and the integration of surgical pathology with cytopathology are other highlights of the program. Our program is accredited by the ACGME and four cytopathology board-certified faculty members cover the service.

Two months of the fellowship year are devoted to elective experience, during which time specialized interests may be pursued either at GWU or other institutions. We also offer one month of the fellowship year at the National Institute of Health (NIH). The fellows participate in many intra-and interdepartmental conferences, and are involved in quality assurance, teaching, intraoperative consultation, and research activities.

The GWU Medical Center is located on the George Washington University campus in an attractive residential area of Washington, DC. The new, state-of-the-art University Hospital is a few steps from the Foggy Bottom Metrorail station and minutes by foot from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Georgetown shopping and entertainment district.

To apply to our program please complete the application form and return it, along with copies of your curriculum vitae, USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3, and ECFMG certificate if applicable. At least two letters of recommendation, one of which from your residency program director and the other one from a pathologist familiar with you and your work, should also be sent under separate cover addressed to Sana O. Tabbara, M.D., Director, Division Anatomic Pathology and addressed to:
