AHEC
The District
of Columbia Area Health Education Center (DC AHEC) seeks to increase the
supply, distribution, quality, and effectiveness of health professional
training in our city. The DC AHEC strives to improve the overall state
of health and well being of residents of the District of Columbia through
the expansion of patient centered health education training opportunities
in medically underserved areas and by enhancing continuing education programs
for health professionals practicing in our communities. The DC AHEC develops
supportive recruitment and retention programs to increase the number of
individuals from communities of color or disadvantaged backgrounds entering
careers in health care.
We are funded
by a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration, Bureau
of Health Professions, Division of Interdisciplinary Community-Based Programs.
Partners of the DC AHEC are the Catholic University of America, the George
Washington University, Georgetown University, Howard University, and the
District of Columbia Primary Care Association. Through these associations,
the DC AHEC delivers the greatest possible benefit to the medically underserved
community, its health providers, the universities, and the city.

HCOP
The Health Careers
Opportunity Program (HCOP) is a partnership with the Latin American Youth
Center, located at 14th and Columbia Road NW in the District of Columbia.
The program enhances the academic skills of students from disadvantaged
backgrounds and supports them in successfully competing, entering and
graduating from health professions training programs.
Students enrolled
in the HCOP program spend the summer months at the GW School of Medicine
and Health Sciences engaged in college preparatory work in the biomedical
sciences, SAT preparation, as well as courses that reinforce English and
Mathematics skills.

ISCOPES
The Interdisciplinary
Student Community-Oriented Prevention Enhancement Service (ISCOPES) Project
is a collaborative effort between The George Washington University (GWU)
and George Mason University (GMU). It involves students from the School
of Medicine and Health Sciences, School of Public Health and Health Services
and College of Nursing and Health Science. The project began in April
1995 under a grant from the Health Professions School in Service to the
Nation (HPSISN) Program of the Pew Health Professions Commission and the
National Fund for Medical Education, sponsored by The Pew Charitable Trusts,
the Corporation for National Service and the Bureau of Health Professions.
Presently, the project is supported by GWU and GMU. Since the beginning
of ISCOPES, the project has evolved from first and second year medical,
physician assistant, nurse practitioner students to include health services
management and policy students, physical therapy students and graduate
public health students. These students participate in interdisciplinary
teams to conduct service-learning activities in the community. Teams,
comprised of students from each discipline, are placed into community
sites to learn while providing service. Students work with community-based
organizations to identify health needs and design health education and
health promotion activities. The students' service-learning activities
are supervised by a university preceptor and a community preceptor. Students
are given curriculum modules on community-oriented primary care (COPC),
teamwork, continuous quality improvement (CQI), and cultural competency.
