Gwish logoGWISH
The George Washington Institute for Spirituality and Health, a nonsectarian academic organization in The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, develops educational and clinical training programs for physicians, chaplains, clergy and other healthcare providers that emphasize the role of spirituality in patient care, engages in research and strives to influence policy in this area. By incorporating the spiritual dimension into patient care, GWISH endeavors to establish a more integrated, compassionate, and caring system for patients at every stage in life.

Community Outreach Program for the Elderly (COPE)
The George Washington University Community Outreach Program for the Elderly, located in the GWU Department of Health Care Sciences, integrates gerontology education, practice generated/applied research and community services. The program was established in 1978, and has provided community service learning experiences for GWU medical, nursing and allied health students, as well as an interdisciplinary learning opportunity for social work students from area universities. The program demonstrates an effective model for sustained university-community collaboration; an interdisciplinary practice model for community-based long term care services for frail older adults; and a model for integrating clinical practice and research. Programs include The Geriatric Assessment and Case Management Program; the Dementia Live Alone Project; the Minority Aging Program; and The Creativity Discovery Corps (a collaborative project with the GWU Center on Aging Health and Humanities).
