The overall mission of The George Washington University Medical Center mandates significant contributions to the continuum of learning for health care professionals. The primary responsibility for meeting this obligation lies with the faculty. To assist faculty in meeting this responsibility to post-graduate health care professionals, there shall be an administrative Office of Continuing Education in the Health Professions to guide development and implementation of educational activities that meet the needs of physicians in clinical practice and research.

PURPOSE

The George Washington University Medical Center is located in a unique geographical region composed of three governmental jurisdictions, each with different statutory requirements for continuing medical education. The Medical Center is a complex organization comprised of two schools, multiple research institutes, the University Hospital, and a vast network of voluntary physician faculty throughout the community. Therefore, CME activities shall strive to meet the educational needs of these disparate groups as well as provide opportunities to fulfill the CME reporting requirements of each jurisdiction. In so doing, it is a purpose of the Office of CEHP to build a closer relationship between faculty and the broader health care community within these jurisdictions, ultimately expanding professional resources and improving outcomes for patients.

Specifically, CME activities are intended to:

  • Advance comprehension and implementation of valid new management, skills-oriented and clinical concepts to improve patient care,

  • Prepare post-graduate physicians to meet specialty certification requirements,

  • Encourage a team approach to patient care by increasing opportunities for interdisciplinary communication and education with allied health care providers and health educators,

  • Improve ability of physicians to identify educational and clinical needs of health care consumers,

  • Identify educational needs of physicians through evaluation of CME activities,

  • Create mechanisms to measure impact of educational interventions on patient outcomes.

Primary beneficiaries of CEHP's CME programming shall be physicians who provide direct care to patients in clinical settings, design/implement health care management systems, monitor standards of care in clinical settings, assess performance of individual physicians and groups of physicians.

    TYPES OF ACTIVITIES

The GWUMC administration and Office of CEHP will strive to fulfill its purpose by developing and presenting education conferences, symposia, board review courses, enduring materials, jointly-sponsored activities, web- and other technology-based educational opportunities. Activities targeted to and driven by physician needs will be developed and implemented in compliance with the ACCME's Essential Areas and Elements, including the Standards for Commercial Support and Accreditaton Policies.
