GW Faculty Incentive for Program Development and Direction
BACKGROUND: Hours a physician program director invests in developing the content of CME activities, whether the activity is designed to yield net revenue or not, frequently competes with compensated hours providing patient care. Therefore, to diminish financial barriers for GW faculty who wish to develop CME activities, a two-tiered financial incentive mechanism should be implemented. Formulas used to calculate program director's incentives and other fees will be subject to biannual review by the Office of CEHP, CME Committee, and the Medical Center Executive Committee. POLICY: Course Director's Fee It is recommended that all GW faculty who fulfill the role of a CME activity's course director be eligible to receive a director's fee for each CME-approved hour contained in the final activity product. The rate used to calculate the fee is indicated on Schedule B and may not be exceeded. A Course Director's Fee may only be paid when net revenue from the CME activity will cover the expense, unless otherwise authorized by the Department Chair, entity head and the Office of CEHP. Such fees must be included in the approved budget at the beginning stages of planning. In the event the activity is co-directed, that amount will be divided between the co-directors. Payment of the course director's fee to GW employees will be facilitated by the Office of Continuing Education in the Health Professions through the payroll office as supplemental compensation (for full-time faculty). The Director's Fee for employees of the Medical Faculty Associates (MFA) will be remitted to the MFA per MFA policy. Director's Fees to other voluntary faculty will be remitted directly to the physician serving as course director. POLICY: Supplemental "Bonus" GW faculty who serve as the program chair of a financially successful CME activity may be eligible to receive additional supplemental "bonus" when net revenue remains after accounting for associated expenses incurred by all entities. Department Chairs may choose to adopt the following bonus policy or develop one of their own so long as that formula does not exceed the financial limits of this formula approved by the Medical Center Executive Committee: Upon approval of a CME activity's final financial statement, the adjusted net revenue will be transferred from the appropriate account in the Office of CEHP to the account indicated by the sponsoring department's chair. Bonus may be paid only from the activity's adjusted net revenue (after the appropriate Medical Center assessments) and shall not exceed the lesser of 10% of adjusted net revenue or $10,000. Payment of the bonus will be facilitated by the Office of Continuing Education in the Health Professions through the payroll office as supplemental compensation (for full-time faculty) or as honoraria (for voluntary faculty) with the signature approval of the department chair, entity head, Office of CEHP, and Fiscal Affairs. |
