Basic HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Self-Study Tutorial
Who, What, Where and When?
GWUMC requires that all persons with regular full time faculty appointments complete the Basic HIPAA Primer offered online below. Faculty with appointments at CNMC, the Washington VA, the Washington Hospital Center, or the Medical Faculty Associates may provide proof of HIPAA training from these covered entities in lieu of the GW training program. Certification or proof of training must be submitted with their annual reappointment letter for FY 2005/2006.
Limited service faculty [adjunct/clinical faculty] must complete the GW online Basic HIPAA Primer as noted above or provide evidence of HIPAA certification from the covered entity in which they hold a primary affiliation or other formal HIPAA training.
Also, without exception, before engaging in research activities and prior to submission to its IRB, GW requires 1) completion of the Basic HIPAA training or equivalent as noted above and 2) a HIPAA Certificate of Training documenting attendance at the seminar "Implementing HIPAA's Privacy Rule in Human Subject Research" or proof of completion of the online version of GW HIPAA Research training module. For information on accessing the research tutorial, please contact the Office of Human Research, 2300 Eye St., NW, Ross Hall 613, Washington, DC 20037, Phone: 202.994.2715, Fax: 202 994-0247
Once per week (usually on a Monday) CME certificates for physicians and certificates of participation for non-physicians are sent to learners who have successfully completed this Basic HIPAA Tutorial. If your need for HIPAA training documentation is more urgent than that, please contact the Office of CEHP at 202.994.4285 for special arrangments.
