A Program of the Center on Aging, Health & Humanities
at the George Washington University Medical Center
What is the Creativity Discovery Corps?
The Creativity Discovery Corps was founded in 1997 by Gene
Cohen, M.D., Ph.D. and Barbara Soniat, Ph.D. of The Center on Aging,
Health & Humanities at The George Washington University. The Corps is
supported by organizations and individuals who appreciate the need for
sharing the life stories and special creative talents of older adults.
These organizations include other programs at The George Washington University
(e.g., the Art Therapy Program and the Oral History Program) as well as
a wide range of community-based programs (e.g., IONA Senior Services in
Washington, DC). It was developed in response to the fact that creativity
in later life has been greatly under-recognized-both its potential and
its prevalence. Awareness that there is no age limit to tapping human
potential affects not only how we view and prepare for our own future
development, but it also influences how society nurtures and benefits
from its older human resources.
