GW Cancer Institute Biennial Cancer Survivorship Research Symposium
Research to Practice: Creating Novel Interventions to Eliminate Health Inequalities

To contribute to a solid base of applied research and scientific knowledge about the ongoing challenges facing cancer survivors, GWCI held its second GWCI Biennial Cancer Survivorship Research Symposium on May 20, 2011. Focused on raising awareness of survivorship concerns and improving research and clinical care for adult survivors of pediatric cancers (ASPC) and young adult cancer survivors (YACS), the symposium brought together experts, including researchers, clinicians, and survivors, to highlight trends in cancer survivorship research and clinical care, including state-of-the-science as well as future directions. The symposium goals were to 1) examine current research on the drivers of health disparities, 2) describe novel and evidence-based interventions for ASPC and YACS and next steps for clinical translation, 3) provide recommendations by survivors for overcoming common ASPC and YACS challenges, and 4) collaboratively identify innovative interventions as solutions to significant physical, psychosocial, emotional, and economically-derived health disparities within these populations. Experts, including survivors who shared their perspective in each session, discussed five key topics to explore interventions related to: health systems, health maintenance, professional training, psychosocial issues, and community-based resources.

Survivorship Research Roundtable

caSNP will host its second roundtable discussion in Fall 2011. Details regarding the topic and date will be forthcoming.

caSNP hosted a roundtable discussion on October 16, 2009, that focused on Cancer Survivorship Research. This event brought together thought leaders in the cancer survivorship research and clinical communities to identify areas of potential growth in survivorship research, with particular focus on reducing health care disparities.

Cancer Survivorship Map

Cancer survivors may have physical, psychological, social, spiritual and economic late effects of cancer treatment. The Cancer Survivorship Map provides information and resources to assist adult survivors of pediatric cancer in the transition out of active cancer treatment.

The Survivor's Map website launched on May 20, 2011 at the GW Cancer Institute Biennial Cancer Survivorship Research Symposium.
