he Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology has a world-class research faculty which both provides in depth investigations in a variety of areas as well as providing excellent teaching opportunities in both research and clinical areas. The department has a long and successful record in training graduate students at the Ph.D. and master's levels. Graduates have gone on to achieve national and international acclaim as distinguished educators, science writers and researchers, professors and chairs of academic departments, and as heads and directors of research in the pharmaceutical industry.
Faculty research interests include: the molecular and cellular basis of disease with emphasis on AIDS, cancer, wound healing, and vascular biology; structure, function and interactions of proteins; genomics, protenomics, and bioinformatics; regulation of cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis; signal transduction; cell junctions; and eicosanoid metabolism.
The department's faculty are involved in the nations premier research institutions including: The National Institutes of Health (NIH), The Holland Laboratory of the American Red Cross, The Children's National Medical Center, and The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR).
