Anne N. Hirshfield, Ph.D.
Prior to coming to GW, Dr. Hirshfield was Professor of Anatomy and Assistant Dean for Research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She conducted research on the development and function of the mammalian ovary and was an NIH-funded Principal Investigator for more than 20 years. She has been internationally recognized for her work on the physiological control of ovarian function, ovarian aging, and reproductive toxicology. In addition to her research, Dr. Hirshfield made major contributions to the University of Maryland School of Medicine in the realms of teaching and administration. She taught Anatomy and Embryology to first year medical students for many years and was honored by awards from her students. Under her leadership, the University of Maryland streamlined and strengthened its human research protections program and became the second institution in the nation to implement an electronic, paperless process for the program. She garnered millions of dollars for the University from Federal Agencies and corporate sponsors to expand the research infrastructure and she created numerous intramural programs to enhance research productivity. Dr. Hirshfield is a graduate of Swarthmore College and received her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. ________________________ Office of Health Research, Compliance and Technology Transfer |
