Linking to Electronic Articles and Books
Prepared by: Jennifer McDaniel
This guide will show you how to create links to full-text electronic journal articles and books which are part of Himmelfarb Library's electronic collections. These links can be used in Blackboard as well as in other course materials.
Since many of the resources illustrated here are available through library subscriptions, it is important to create a durable link in order for the link to work consistently and to allow access to the item from both on- and off-campus locations.
Constructing a Durable Link
A durable link is composed in two steps:
- Obtain a direct link to the desired article or book. This link should be formatted so that it works consistently and is not dependent on a specific computer or browser session. Instructions for specific resources, publishers, and platforms are provided below.
- Append the proxy prefix to the beginning of the direct link. This step provides secure off-campus access to resources. The proxy prefix is: http://proxygw.wrlc.org/login?url=
For example, to create a durable link for the article, Williams, A. N. (2007). "To observe well ... and thence to make himself rules": John Locke's principles and practice of child healthcare. Medical Humanities, 33, 22-34:
|
Tips:
- There should be NO spaces between the proxy prefix and the direct URL.
- Always test the complete link (e.g. the proxy prefix+direct URL).

Resource, Publisher & Platform Instructions

These instructions are organized by the publisher or platform where the electronic journals and books are available. To determine which vendor or platform provides a specific title, please access the title by using the E-Journals or E-Texts links from the Library homepage.
