How to Find Reserve Items

Course Reserves

Course reserves are highly utilized materials and supplementary readings for GWU Medical Center courses. They are placed "on reserve" by faculty and/or teaching staff at the beginning of each semester.

How do I find course reserves?

The material placed on reserve-books, journal articles, audiovisual materials, pamphlets, and exams-are searchable in the library catalog. The best way to search is to click on the link for the "Course Reserves Locator" on the Himmelfarb Library Homepage.

Search by Instructor, Course Number, or Course Name:
  1. Type your instructor's last name into the search box, then click "Instructor" (a list of faculty will appear, click on the link for your instructor).
  2. Type your course number without any spaces, then click "Course Number" (e.g. PUBH 208.10).
  3. Type your course name, then click "Course Name" (e.g. Qualitative Data Analysis).
  4. Write down or print the call number for the item or items you want to borrow (e.g. R118.6 .R54 2005 or XPUBH 178 2007) and bring it to the Circulation Desk. Circulation staff will use the call number to locate the item.

Reserve materials may only be checked out for 3 hours. Some test preparation materials, such as the USMLE review materials, may circulate for up to 1 week.

Suggestions

A list of reserve items is kept in a binder on the Circulation Desk. It is labeled "Items on Reserve for (Semester and Year)" and provides a list of all items on reserve by course in alphabetical order.

If you are still having trouble locating an item, ask the Circulation Desk staff for assistance. Keep in mind that the item may not be on reserve. Check with your instructor to see if it should be on reserve.
