Finding Journal Articles
How do I access library databases and journals that are available for online use? Will I be asked to sign-in to access these online resources?
The best way to access online databases and journals off-campus is by connecting through the VPN and then navigating the Himmelfarb Library homepage. Click on E-Databases or E-Journals depending upon the source you are trying to access. The benefit of this approach is that the system recognizes you as a student giving you the rights to access database search tools and articles for viewing.
How do I find a specific article when I have the citation? I know the article I want . . . How do I find out if the library has it?
To see if the article is available electronically through Himmelfarb Library, go to the library homepage, and click on the link to "E-Journals" on the left side of the page under "Search the Collection". In the search box, enter the name of the journal title for the article you need, and click on SEARCH. If we have a subscription to the electronic version of the journal, you'll see a record listed which specifies the dates that are available, along with a link to access the journal. When you click on the link to the journal, you should see a list of volumes or years - click on the appropriate year and volume number that you need, and then look for the specific page numbers. Note: You must be logged in to the library through the VPN to view the full-text. If you are not logged into the VPN you will be asked to login to ALADIN.
You should also check the library catalog to see if the library owns a copy of the journal in print or electronic format. You can access the catalog from the library homepage - the link to the catalog is on the left side of the page under "Search the Collection". Type the name of the journal into the search box, use the drop down box to select "periodical title", and click on SEARCH. Take a look at your results to see if the journal you entered is listed. For more information on a title, click on the "details" box. The record should list the volumes and years that the library owns.
How can I obtain a copy of a journal article that is not available at Himmelfarb Library?
Himmelfarb Library offers a service called Documents2Go that permits a student or faculty member to request copies of journal articles not available from Himmelfarb Library. Fees for this service are outlined on our page about Interlibrary Loan Services. Himmelfarb staff processes requests within 24 hours although you should allow up to 7-14 days for receipt of requested articles from the supplying library.
What does it mean when the library catalog says a journal is On-Site or Off-Site? How do I get a copy of an article if the journal is not available online?
Himmelfarb Library has many journals available in print format, particularly older journal volumes. These are designated in our catalog as onsite or offsite, depending on where they are stored. To request an article from a print volume, complete this form. Most requests will be processed within 24-48 hours.
