As a result of these issues with the traditional publishing model, an "Open Access" model is beginning to be employed to counteract both the increasing publisher costs and inequity of researchers paying for their own ideas.
Open Access Models
The Open Access movement is a direct result of the current issues with traditional publishing model. Open Access publications are available online in a durable archival format and at no cost to a user. They are not under the same types of stringent copyright and licensing restrictions as traditionally-published articles.
There are several different publishing models which fall under the "Open Access" umbrella. Open access journals and institutional repositories are currently the most common. Increasingly, ad-driven publication is also emerging as a trend in scholarly publishing.
