George Washington University Hospital
Within minutes of popular tourist attractions and government headquarters, the George Washington University Hospital serves a diverse group of patients — from area residents to visiting dignitaries and heads of state. As a designated tertiary care and academic institution, the hospital provides physicians and patients with the latest in technological innovations for the diagnosis and treatment of the most acute clinical conditions.
The new George Washington University Hospital was completed in August 2002. Constructed across the street from the previous facility, it sits on university land that was once used as a parking lot. The property is just south of Washington Circle and adjacent to the Foggy Bottom Metro station. The entrance is on 23rd Street.
Facts and Figures
- Since July 1997, the George Washington University Hospital has been jointly owned and operated by a partnership between Universal Health Services, Inc., and the George Washington University. The new hospital, a $96 million project opened in 2002, was funded by the partnership. Under the terms of the 50-year agreement, UHS holds an 80 percent interest and the University holds a 20 percent interest.
- GWUH is Washington D.C.’s first new hospital in 20 years.
- The facility is six stories from ground level, 400,000 square feet, with 371 beds.
- The Emergency Department is a Level 1 trauma center, seeing over 57,500 patients a year.
- Operating suites are adjacent to recovery areas, catheterization labs, and angiography suites.
- A majority of patient rooms are private.
- Each medical team carries a radiofrequency (RF) phone.
- The hospital is equipped with wireless (WLAN) capability for IPAQs and wireless PDAs.
- Full auditorium and classrooms are available for community seminars and medical education.
- The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations and licensed by the District of Columbia Regulatory Affairs Department.
