The M.S. Program in Genomics & Bioinformatics offered at The George Washington University provides several options to the student. The student may choose from either a Biology or Computer Science focused track. Each track offers the option of preparing a thesis by completing research at GWU Medical Center, Children's National Medical Center, NIH or FDA.

Students choosing the Biological track will take a minimum of 7 courses in the Biological Sciences, which emphasizes Biochemistry, Genomics, Proteomics, Bioinformatics, and 1 Computer Science course to acquire general understanding of the principles of organization, searching, and analysis of large volumes of data. Students choosing the Computer Science track will take 6 courses in Computer Sciences and 6 courses in fundamental Biology to familiarize themselves with the subject of Genomics and Proteomics.

The Biological track program leading to the MS degree, with thesis, requires the completion of 32 credit hours, 6 of which are earned by the preparation of a thesis. The non-thesis program requires at total of 35 credit hours, 6 of which are earned by a hands-on practicum at the participating institutions. Completion of each program generally requires two years.

Applicants for both tracks must have a bachelor's degree with a background in biological and chemical sciences. Required courses include:

  • General Chemistry (1 year)
  • General Biology (1 year)
  • Organic Chemistry (1 year)
  • College Physics (1 year)
  • Basic Computer Sciences
  • Calculus
  • Statistics

Other requirements for the program require a grade point average of at least 3.0 and a combined score of 1100 (or above 50% for each of the three categories) on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination.
